Depletion of environment is becoming a grave problem day by day. Global warming, depletion of ozone layer, melting of glacier, change in the monsoon schedule, droughts, floods, etc are the result of this imbalance. Conservation of forests and planting more and more number of trees is the only effective solution to overcome this problem. Each tree that is planted by us yields us services and utilities worth lakhs of rupees. According to a research, each tree, in its life span of 100 years, gives us utilities such as oxygen, wood, shelter, fuel, fodder, etc worth Rs 21 lakh. Besides this, it also helps in water conservation, soil conservation, etc and thus greatly helps in maintaining the ecological balance. Keeping this importance of trees in mind, Ekal Vidyalaya Foundation has undertaken sapling plantation programme under its Swabhimaan Jaagran Abhiyaan. Central office-bearer of Swabhimaan Jaagran Abhiyaan Lalan Kumar Sharma informed that the foundation has vowed to plant 10 lakh saplings in the coming year. Each ekal vidyalaya comprises of 30 students. At present, the number of pass out students is much more than the present number of students studying at the vidyalayas. Even if each and every student scattered in different villages plants just one sapling, then also at least 50 saplings will be planted in each village. Thus, the students who have studied in ekal vidyalayas themselves can plant 10 lakh saplings within an year. Student who plants the sapling will also tag his name with the sapling so that his emotional relation will be maintained with that plant. When the sapling will turn into a tree, it will give a great satisfaction to that student. A variety of saplings such as medicinal herbs, fruits, vegetables, flowers, etc will be included in the drive. Saplings that will give furniture wood will also be included. This will help in the propagation of a variety of plants at various places in the country.Sharma said that any movement yields success only with the active participation by the people. Hence, in order to connect common people with this movement, Ekal Vidyalaya will create awareness about tree plantation in other fields also such as at government offices, educational institutions, etc. The drive was initiated on the occasion of World Environment Day at Shri Santram Mandir, Nadiyad (Gujarat). Pujya Swamiji planted a neem sapling in the temple premises in presence of hundreds of karyakartas assembled from all parts of the country. Along with Swamiji, Central Incharge of Ekal Movement Shyam Guptaji also planted the sapling to initiate the movement. Paryavaran Sanrakshan Sankalp Yatra was also organized to mark the occasion. Kendriya karyakartas and Pollution Control Board officials participated in the procession with great enthusiasm.
