Organic farming developed by Uttan Krishi Sanshodhan Sanstha

Under the roof of Keshav Srushti, Uttan Krushi Sanshodhan Sanstha (UKSS) is working in research, education, awareness, co-operation, training and self-reliance in the field of agriculture, irrigation, organic manure, production and processing of vegetables and fruits, by applying traditional as well as modern techniques to improve sustainable qualitative productivity, which ultimately would be beneficial to the entire society. Besides this, UKSS also works for environment protection and rejuvenation.
Keshav Srushti is situated in the lap of mother Nature, about 35 km from Mumbai Airport. The campus, spread over 200 acres of lush green valley with agricultural land, fruit bearing trees, herbal plants and forest wealth, carries an unimaginable aura of peace and is a hub of a number of social service projects.
According to the aim mentioned in the slogan ‘Banjar Bhumi ko Upajaoo Banaanaa’, around 6 acre uneven, rocky and barren land and 4 acre salty land was converted into cultivable land. Thereby, cultivation of different crops, fruits and vegetables was executed successfully by using the method of organic farming i.e. not using chemical fertilizers/pesticides and using only organic manure. Considering the priority and contribution in organic farming by UKSS, Mira-Bhayander Municipal Corporation awarded the organization with first prize for the year 2007-08 in the exhibition under category of fruits, flowers and vegetables.
Through Madhuban Pariyojana of UKSS, common people were encouraged for tree plantation and conservation in the names of their ancestors. Over 1000 people supported the scheme and now there are about 2,000 trees in Keshav Srushti campus, under this scheme. Considering the contribution made by UKSS in the field of environment protection and rejuvenation, the organization was felicitated with Vruksha-Mitra award.
Sufficient and continuous water supply is the necessity for execution of all social development and social reforming projects and for protection of environment and its rejuvenation. The requirement of drinking water for human resources of all sister organizations of Keshav Srushti is partially fulfilled by the water supply system of Mira-Bhayander Municipal Corporation. However, the major hurdle was the requirement of water for cleaning and general use and for gardening 51,000 litre per day. To cope up with this requirement, Keshav Srushti and its associated organizations used to purchase the water from water suppliers through tankers and pay sizable amount for the purpose. To overcome the situation, year 2008-09 was dedicated for the project ‘Tanker-Free Keshav Srushti.’ Accordingly, a major infrastructural work of development of two lakes viz Madhuban and Jitawani, having water restoring capacity of four crore litre and two crore litre, respectively, was initiated. Water supply from the said two lakes has been started to sister organizations and their expenses for the purpose have been curtailed sizably.
Indian Ayurvedic and herbal medicines are world’s oldest and most well documented knowledge-based healing systems. To make this medicinal system acceptable as per current global norms with backing of current tools of research, Vanaushadhi Trust has been doing some commendable work in this field. There are nearly 500 herbal plants within the large campus of Keshav Srushti, some of them being rare species. The herbarium takes care of classifying and storing the data about these herbal plants. This herbarium and the data it has, is being used for study and research by the trust and is also made available to Ayurveda and Botany students who visit the laboratory on study tours.
