Kathmandu, April 21: Six major Madhesi parties of Nepal have unified and formed a new political party to have greater unity for achieving their common objectives. It has been learned that the top leaders of the parties have decided to name the unified party Rastriya Janata Party.
Initially, the leaders of Tarai Madhesh Loktantrik Party, Sadbhavana Party, Rashtriya Madhes Samajwadi Party, Tarai Madhes Sadbhawana Party and Madhesi Janadhikar Forum Gantantrik announced unification and formation of Rashtriya Janta Party in Kathmandu. Later, Nepal Sadbhawana Party also joined the new party. The leaders also unveiled flag and election symbol of the new party.
The unified party has decided to choose ‘umbrella’ as its election symbol. Though the party had decided to pick Mahanta Thakur as its Chairman, the unified party has decided to form a group committee to run the party following a dispute among the second rung leaders.
The five parties have altogether 23 lawmakers in the Parliament. Leaders said they are holding negotiations with Anil Jha-led Nepal Sadbhavana Party also to be part of the unification.
Earlier, The United Democratic Madhesi Front of Nepal, comprising major Madhesi parties, has rejected the new Constitution Amendment Bill and decided to boycott next month's local polls. Madhesi leaders said that proposed bill is not sufficient to address their demands. They are demanding constitution amendment on various issues including re-demarcation of provincial boundaries, more representation, citizenship and language.
